The
National Weather Service routinely gathers weather data for the Atlanta area.
Reports for November and December of 2005 indicated colder temperatures requiring
more heating for Georgia's consumers.
- December 2005
was the coldest month since January 2003 and the second coldest since December
2000.
- December 2005
required 133 percent more heating than November and was 18 percent colder
than normal.
- Twenty-two
of the first 26 days in December 2005 had below normal temperatures, including
19 days with freezing temperatures.
- December 2005
totaled 710 heating degree days (HDD). HDD measures the amount of heat needed
for a home. To figure HDD, take the average of the high and low temperatures
for one day and subtract it from 65 degrees.
