12 Things You Need to Remember Before Cranking It Up This Season

 

1. If your fireplace has never been used, be sure to clean the unit before using it. Otherwise, dust and other particles from construction can harm the fan and motor.
   
2. Always follow your owner’s manual for safety and maintenance instructions.
   
3. Leave doors to the fireplace open during use.
   
4. Never go to sleep with logs burning.
   
5. Don’t run gas logs when you are not in the room or not at home.
   
6. Keep small children away from the fireplace, even when not in use. Do not leave children unattended near a burning fire.
   
7. If you have a vented fireplace, be sure the damper is open before burning a fire.
   
8. Have your fireplace serviced annually by a licensed contractor to ensure it is in safe working condition. Be sure that the burner, fan, venting, pilot light and thermostat are inspected.
   
9. If you do not already have one in your home, install a carbon monoxide detector. Anyone with gas appliances should have CO detectors in their home. Remember to change the battery and, if your detector is old, replace it with a new one according to manufacturers’ instructions.
   
10. Don’t forget that your fireplace takes a while to cool after burning. Do not try to clean the glass when it is hot. – it can crack and cause injury.
    
11. Keep external vents clear of grass clippings, bushes and other materials.
    
12. Remove decorative objects from in front of the fireplace while a fire is burning.
