Seven Natural Gas Resolutions You Should Make for 2008
1. Change the Batteries in
Your Carbon Monoxide
(CO) Detector
Your CO
detector can
save your life
in the event
of a gas leak,
but only if it’s
working. If
you haven’t
changed the
batteries in
your CO
detector within
the last
year, be sure to do so as soon as possible.
If you don’t have a CO detector in your home,
that should be the first thing you do in 2008.
They should be installed on each level of your
home, especially in hallways outside sleeping
areas.
If you have had the same CO detector for five
or more years, change it out for a new one.
CO detectors do “go bad” and can quit working,
even when the batteries are changed.
Refer to your manufacturer’s instructions to
determine the life of your CO detector.
2. Change Your Furnace
Filters Once a Month
How long has it been since you changed the
filter in your furnace? Chances are, it’s been
too long. In order to be sure that your unit is
running as efficiently and safely as possible,
you should change your filter once a month.
To make this easier, go ahead and buy all the filters you’ll need for 2008. Be sure to mark the date that you’re going to change your filter each month on your calendar. That way, you’ll have them handy when that date comes around.
3. Install a Programmable
Thermostat
If you don’t
already have a
programmable
thermostat,
this is the year
to get one. A
programmable
thermostat, if
set correctly,
will help you save money and increase
comfort
in your home.
Programmable thermostats allow you to
program temperature settings based on
your schedule for maximum energy savings.
If you already have a programmable thermostat, be sure it is set for maximum savings. In winter, set it to 68 degrees or lower when you are home, 55 degrees when you are away. In summer, set it to 78 degrees or higher when you are home, 85 when you are away.
